Ornaments

Gold, concrete, mosquitoes. variable dimensions, 2018

"Ornaments" was born from daily moments experienced during my residency in Marseille, at "La Deviation". The fact that I literally and constantly had to use self-defense from Culicidae insects, commonly called mosquitoes, during that time became the fundamental element for the creation of this piece. The continuous diurnal presence of the insects generated a reflection on my part on the opposing concepts of rejection and fetish. I wanted to highlight the feeling of adversity in order to take advantage of their presence. I therefore decided to represent these contrasting feelings through the use of two materials in complete opposition, concrete and gold. Inserted into the noblest metal, the tiny insects become precious ornaments like miniatures around an inscription; they complement the aesthetics of the geometric shape composed of assembled gold leaves and become divine creatures. Below this octagon, a varying amount of small concrete vessels contain other insects of the same category. Here, in the inert and poor material, the insects are preserved as hunted prey, trapped with great sense of revenge. The work, full of human, conflicting and universal feelings, becomes a contemporary visual representation of their balance.
